It’s tradition in Hawaii to put a scoop of ice cream in the bottom of your “shave” ice and top it off with a delicious Snow Cap and a sprinkle of Li Hing Mui powder. Some even enjoy the island specialty of adding Azuki/Adzuki beans on top of their ice cream. So, what are these island specialties?
What is a Snow Cap? A Snow Cap is a sweetened condensed milk concoction typically poured on top of a shave ice dessert. Trust us. It’s delicious! |
What is Li Hing Mui powder? Li Hing Mui powder is a dried plum powder that’s a combination of sweet, sour, and salty. It’s very popular in Hawaii and most often sprinkled on fruit, shave ice, or used to rim a margarita glass. Similar to how some people like to put chili powder on fresh fruit, this is how they do it in parts of Asia and Hawaii.
What are azuki/adzuki beans? Azuki beans are an East-Asian grown bean that are commonly used in Asian desserts. These red beans are boiled in sugar until they are soft and deliciously sweet. |
